NFSMW under Windows XP/Vista X64
Getting Need For Speed Most Wanted to install under Windows XP/Vista X64.
Need for speed most wanted is a great game, but when I switched back to Windows X64 (64bit operating system) I had an install error when I was trying to install the game, it basicly said that the Direct X that is was trying to install was not compatibile with the operating system and the install closed.
So I had a think about it for a while and come up with the idea to copy CD 1 (using the CD version here) to the HDD, going to the Direct X folder, deleting its contents and putting a newer direct in that folder that works with the x64 operating system, create an ISO file when I had put the newer x64 compatible Direct X in the Direct X folder and burn it to a CD. And what do you know it worked.
So I wrote this short and sweet guide with plenty of pictures, I also use a free program called ISO Creator to create an image of the finial end result so that I can easily burn it to a new CD with my favourite burner program.
Good reading…
First you will need to insert the CD into your CD-ROM Drive, cancel out off the install menu that auto runs, right click on the CD-ROM Drive that you put the CD into and select Copy.

right click menu
Now go to the folder were you want to paste the copied contents (I choose C:\Temp) and hit “Ctrl V” or right click and click Paste.

contents folder
Next you need to go into the folder called DirectX and delete all it’s contents by selecting “Ctrl A” which is select all and then either select the “Delete” key on your keyboard or right click and select Delete and say good buy to the contents

delete contents
Now you need to go to the location were your updated direct X is (I am sure that you have previously downloaded this) and extract it contents some were, now go to that folder and do “Ctrl A” for select all, then “Ctrl C” for copy, now go to the “NFSMW\DirectX folder were we deleted the old files and either right click in the folder and choose paste or “Ctrl V” for paste.

paste new files
This part isn’t required but I like to check its size by right clicking on the main NFSMW folder and selecting properties and it will tell you the size of the folder and its contents, we have 670mb or so total size so that should fit on a blank cd perfectly.

size check
Really you don’t need to create an ISO image, you could just load up your CD/DVD Burning program and burn a cd with/from the “nfsmw” folder that we have modified.
Now we load up iso Creator.

iso creater
Now we select Browse and go to a location were we want to save the ISO file, put in a file name (I like to try and make sure that is the same name as the CD) and then choose Save.

browse and save as
Now in ISO Creator were it says “Volume name” you can enter something like nfsmw_disc1 or leave it default, now in the “Folder path” section select “Browse” and point it to the location were the nfsmw folder is that we have been working with and select OK.

correct volume name
Click start and watch it do it’s thing which should only take about 30 seconds if that.

Writing the iso image
Click OK when it has finished and close ISO Creator.

image created
Now you can go into your favourite CD/DVD Burning program, load the ISO image that you just created and burn it to a Blank CD.

write the image to a blank cd
Now once it has finished burning you can load it up, the Autorun will load, follow the usual prompts to install the game and there you have it.

install going well
So there you have it. The game now installs fine.
When you go to run the game it will ask for a CD for CD checking etc, use the original disc for that purpose, The CD we just made is only for installing the game.
If you have any questions just email me.

Thank you very much for your help.
This trick really works!
Do you think that could be possible to apply this trick to other games that don’t cooperate when we are trying to install them on xp x64?
Well, thank you very much again.
Have you a nice day..
