Windows Vista Information
I have been using Windows vista on my laptop and now I have just purchased Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit for my desktop system.
Here are some links to web pages that I have found usefull
- Windows vista features guide.
- Start64 is a great web site for finding all those 64 bit or 64 bit compatible items.
- Vistax64 Forums have some usefull guides etc.
- DWG True View – free 64bit software for viewing many different files like sharing of accurate AutoCAD drawings, viewing and plotting of DWG and DXF files, and DWF file publishing.
- 64xsoft for a small but growing list of 64 bit software.
- Windows User Account Control Step-by-Step Guide.
- Inside the Windows Vista kernal part 1, part 2 and part 3 (goes into great detail but has some great information)
- How to Shrink and Extend NTFS Volumes in Windows Vista.
- How to use the Windows Vista Snipping Tool.
- Understanding Windows Update and Extras in Windows Vista.
- How to use the Command Prompt in the Vista Windows Recovery Environment.
- How to automatically repair Windows Vista using Startup Repair.
I have had a small minor problems with Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit, like Office SBE 2003 in that everytime I open word or outlook for example it comes up with the EUL agreement and when I choose accept it is fine but it comes up next time I open the program.
All of the hardware has 64bit digitally signed software which is great news.
SP1 should be good when it comes out (I use the pre re;ease of SP on my laptop and its fixes file copying problems which is good.
I installed an older version of steam by mistake (problem when you download files and store them locally instead of always downloading the file hen you need it), anyway I got the message below and i couldn’t get around it until I removed it and downloaded the latest steam version.

Also here is a screen shot of me doing some fancy switching. (click for the larger view)
Instead of the normal ALT+TAB combination press and hold the Start button and press TAB to cycle throuh the current open windows (doesn’t work on home basic)
Below is probally the only game related error that I got (apart from the steam one above) and it was BF2, I just clicked on OK and all was fine.

battlefield 2 error
Next is the ATI video card installer which is quiet different from the normal XP one for example.

ati driver install
Next you can type in vsp1cln.exe at an administrator cmd prompt and it will remove all the sp1 crap from your system (files it backs up, when sp1 expands it self I would guess)

vsp1cln.exe
Built in crop and resize functions are now included in Paint.

paint crop seyyings
Alt + Tab in Vista home basic is different than home premium for example.

vista home basic alt tab
Copying and moving things around on Vista is now quiet nice.

Some more copying goodness, drag and open with.

Press start and type cmd, right click and choose run as administrator and type any of the following commands.
- SFC /SCANNOW will run the system file checker.
More to come.
